THE WORK OF ART AND THE END OF THE ERA OF SINGULARITY

As the age of technical reproduction ripens, there is a need to firmly claim the end of the work of art as singularity and to extract all the corollaries of this fact. That is the goal of this essay, which spells out the most relevant changes in the very notion of the work of art (the end of art as a commodity, the end of the «receiver» as an individual subject, the end of the predominance of a stationary art of space over a continuous art of time, the end of esthetics as a realm parted from the Lebenswelt), and also the resistances that keep postponing that esthetic revolution in progress.
