DEMOCRACY AND RECOGNITION Maria João Silveirinha |
The goal of this article is to scrutinize the relations between deliberative democracy and the claims for the recognition of identity in contemporary societies. The issue here is not merely an articulation between the political establishment and the demands for an acknowledgment of the expression of identity in the public space, but also the very forms of communication that constitute that same space. Focused mainly on the democratic societies that are characterized by the demands of a wider social and political recognition of an assorted set of identities, this article takes into account several different answers to the way democracy can, through communication, acknowledge differences while simultaneously being more inclusive. |
