DE RE AND DE DICTO KNOWLEDGE IN FICTIONAL NARRATIVE

Luis Oliveira e Silva
German Studies Department, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Portuguese

The author tries to differentiate de re knowledge from de dicto knowledge, reaching the conclusion that, in real life as well as in fiction, since de dicto knowledge in absentia may lack true referential support, it does not necessarily imply existential quantification. All this makes distinguishing between de re knowledge and de dicto knowledge in absentia highly problematic.
