Within the ambit of literary semiotics (School of Paris), the author endeavours to describe two strategies particular to the functioning of the field of intertextuality: the quotation and the commentary, present in Almeida Garrett’s Voyages, considered here essentially as a didactic discourse. In fact, in this text of Garrett, knowing is transformed, translated and manipulated, with persuasion occupying a prominent place. This essay considers both strategies as conditions for the structuring of significance, whose formation consists of the introduction of interpretative transformations which are expansions that determine, in a new contextuality, selections and production of signifiers available for another making – that of possible interpretations.
