This new research group starts its activities in 2007, integrating three previous research groups («New Forms of Mediation», «Textualities and Electronic Devices», and «Fictionality and Alterity«).

It is set out to make clearer the axis articulating these researches – the relation between art and communication – and to indicate, at the same time and with a stronger emphasis, the specific areas of culture and arts focused by this research group (cinema and performing arts, new media arts, cyberliterature, audience studies and art reception).

In this effort of aggregation and clarification that seeks to firmly implant in Portugal the studies of communication and arts, this research group will develop a conceptual, critical and experimental production.

In the conceptual and critical aspect, the group privileged the following themes:

  1. The relation of contemporary artistic practices, its institutions and publics, with cultural and technological resources;
  2. A new critical framework for the cultural and entertainment industries, namely established around new media;
  3. The appearance of an aesthetics of media and of a technological mediation of sensibility;
  4. The new experimental and artistic possibilities of digital culture (based in hypermedia, interactivity, programming and design);
  5. The expansion of the genres of fictionality and literature (from cinema to cyberliterature and computer games);
  6. The conceptual, historical and critical analysis of Portuguese artistic works – namely in the case of Portuguese cinema, where the lack of research is still evident.

On the methodological point of view, this critical and conceptual production will rely on the crossing of Art Theory and Aesthetics with Media and Communication Theory, also mobilizing semiotics (particularly with its application to the area of electronic textualities), with a methodology that intersects philosophy, communication theory and literary studies, and reception studies as a fundamental tool for the integration of the art system in the communicational phenomena of our time. These researches will give particular attention to the study of Portuguese cases.

In the experimental level, for the concretization of the objectives, both quantitative and qualitative, the improvement of the working conditions at CECL is crucial, namely in terms of IT equipment and specialized support. The continuity of the empirical and experimental research which the teams have been, despite the lack of suficient means, developing throughout the years, requires the establishing of an internal structure – The Laboratory of Digital Arts – particularly important for the work of this research group, but also for the other research groups and projects hosted by CECL.

Several partnerships will also be conducted by this research group, with cultural and R&D institutions, such as:

Associação Ars Industrialis (Paris)

Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisboa)

Museu de Serralves (Porto)

ICS: Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa
